Anime Figure Clones

New figures!

Also, a general PSA on what to expect with cheap figures.

One night in August I suddenly had the urge to buy a few figures online. I think I wanted a Nezuko figure, so I did what anyone would do and went on eBay.

I'm very well aware of clones (and I have a few in my collection already), so when I saw that a local US seller had a few figures that piqued my interest for like $15-30 each shipped, I took a bite.

How are they?

Here's some stuff this month

Not sure why, I didn't really feel like cooking many new things during the summer, but here's some:

Tres Leches

Or "Three Milks". It's a cake made using various types of milk. Probably not super legit, but tasted pretty good. Definitely would've used a boxed cake mix instead of the butter cake mix as this recipe called for. To be fair, I was just trying to use up some of the milk in the fridge.

DIY Miniature House

It's like Lego, but harder

So I was browsing Slickdeals like usual, and I stumbled upon a sale on a miniature DIY house kit for like half off. I figured it was worth a shot, maybe it'll be fun to build -- but how hard could it be?

IMG_20200629_130915.jpg

At first glance, it's not too bad. It's supposed to be rated for 14+, and I think I'm at least 14 years old at this point.

The first thing you see is a bunch of balsa wood, some scraps of cloth and bits of wire in plastic bags, a bunch of instruction booklets and paper. "Okay..." I thought. I'll have to glue some things together.

Starved Rock

It's a really nice place. We didn't go near the crowded main areas, just to some trails nearby. Still worth it though.

A 'new' phone?

Uh... So I may have impulsive bought another phone...

Low key, I've been eyeing this phone for a while. I don't know why I just bought it now but to be honest I don't have that much regret buying it. To be fair, I knew what I was getting to but actually having it in your hands... it's a different feeling.

IMG_20200627_204515.jpg

That is an SM-G1650... or otherwise known as a Samsung Galaxy Folder2 and yep, it is not available in the US unfortunately so I had to get it through someone in South Korea.

Uh.

I probably would have kept using it as my main phone except...

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day to all those fathers out there!

As an aside, I ended up picking up a portable gas stove as well so we can finally cook on the kitchen table. Pretty hot stuff, and I kinda wonder why I haven't tried this before. Would be really nice to do hot pot type of stuff when it gets colder.

We also had some chicken, spaghetti and some lumpia or Filipino spring rolls.

Popin' Cookin': Tamashii Waffles

Does this qualify as food?

I picked up another one of those Popin' Cookin' sets. I've done a few of these before and they're okay. If you don't expect too much they're actually fun little kits to play with.

IMG_20200621_151540.jpg

This one was the tanoshii waffle kit. It kinda got my interest because it was a waffle. (I also respond to "Waffle" when someone calls me that.) If you haven't done one of these before, all you usually need is water. The kit comes with a bunch of individually packaged bags of powder that you mix in specific proportions of water and you get some gummy out of it.

Okay, I sort of lied. It would also be really nice if you had a pair of scissors as well to cut the plastic template apart. Once you cut them apart then it's time to follow the directions. Luckily this one had English text. I've done some before that were in Japanese but luckily there's translations available online and for there's also enough visual aid as well.

Seafood Boil (+ Cheddar Biscuits)

I suddenly had a craving for seafood this afternoon. Instead of just buying something from our residential Red Lobster, I figured I'd try my hands on my own seafood boil. A few months ago, my brother and I grabbed lunch at Crab Boil 59 on the way to the Anime Stuff Store around the suburbs of Chicago. It was the first time I've been to a seafood-only place like this and even though I'm not a huge super fan of seafood, I would definitely go again (preferably post Covid-19) after having a pretty positive experience dining in here.

Original Recipe: https://www.dinneratthezoo.com/seafood-boil-recipe/

It starts off with a standard seafood stock. A lot of water, some onions and garlic and this Old Bay seasoning mix.

Once that's started to boil, it's more or less up to y'all to start adding whatever you want to boil. In my case, I stuck a tiny bit to the recipe and added:

Strawberry Oatmeal Bars

Mm, strawberries.

Original recipe: https://www.wellplated.com/strawberry-oatmeal-bars/

The short of this was that there was a bunch of strawberries in the fridge that were starting to go bad because it was sour and no one really want to eat them. I was thinking of making a strawberry cake maybe but ended up making these oatmeal bars instead.

I started by macerating as many of the strawberries as I could (dicing them and sprinkling sugar on it and letting it rest for a bit) for about ~30 minutes.

Strawberry (Banana) Loaf

What do you do with an overripe banana? You make banana bread! Or in this case, a strawberry banana loaf.

IMG_20200515_185250.jpg

I ended up re-making this again, albeit this time without a ripe banana. Here's the recipe for a Strawberry Bread recipe that I more or less followed.
